Subscriber permissions require the "delete users" permission to be checked

I would like for my “subscriber” role to have read access to content built on a custom content type (via Pods). I have the appropriate read permissions selected in the subscriber role settings, but then I get the message “You do not have access to view this content” when trying to view the items as a subscriber. When I select “Delete users” in the role permissions, however, the content appears just fine. This appears to be something buggy. Please advise.
